Embracing the Cabin Lifestyle
When the winter chill sets in, there’s nothing quite like retreating to a cozy cabin nestled in the heart of the woods. The allure of a timber-framed retreat, complete with roaring fireplaces and the rustic charm of natural wood, is something that captivates the soul. As a timber building and woodworking company, we believe in the power of these enchanting sanctuaries to transport us to a simpler time, where the stresses of the modern world melt away.
In this in-depth article, we’ll explore the art of creating the perfect cozy cabin or lodge using the timeless beauty of timber. Drawing inspiration from the stunning HGTV renovation of Hazel’s Cozy Cabin, we’ll uncover the design techniques and material choices that transform a humble structure into a beloved winter retreat.
Painting the Exterior: A Cozy Canvas
When it comes to creating the ultimate cozy cabin, the exterior sets the tone for the entire experience. Take a cue from Jasmine Roth’s approach in transforming the facade of Hazel’s Cozy Cabin. By painting the entire house a darker color, she was able to shift the focus towards the stunning windows and the new wood Dutch door, creating a sophisticated and inviting first impression.
“Painting the house all one color changes what you focus on and instead of seeing white rails and white trim, you’re going to see the windows and the new wood Dutch door, which is exactly what I wanted the focus on,” Jasmine explains.
Complementing the moody exterior, the addition of tall evergreen trees lining the driveway infuses the cabin with a sense of privacy and seclusion, setting the stage for a true winter wonderland. The inclusion of a custom coffee shop-style window decal on the front adds a playful and charming touch, hinting at the cozy delights that await within.
Designing the Interiors: A Rustic Retreat
Step inside the cabin, and you’ll be immediately captivated by the seamless integration of rustic charm and modern elegance. Jasmine’s approach to the interior design of Hazel’s Cozy Cabin offers a masterclass in balancing timeless materials and contemporary accents.
Embracing Natural Textures
One of the standout features of the cabin’s interior is the use of natural textures, which effortlessly blend the outdoors with the indoors. The decision to install luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring that mimics the look of polished concrete was a stroke of genius, creating a cohesive flow throughout the open-concept living space.
“LVP is a far superior product than linoleum and a great way to save money on flooring,” Jasmine shares. “Since the ceiling was such a standout feature of the home that instantly drew your eyes up, I wanted the flooring to be a study in a different material, in this case, concrete and a lighter color.”
The exposed, sanded ceiling beams further enhance the cabin’s rustic charm, lending an authentic, weathered aesthetic that complements the timber framing. By highlighting these architectural details, Jasmine was able to create a sense of brightness and airiness throughout the living areas.
Incorporating Cozy Accents
No cozy cabin is complete without a captivating fireplace, and Jasmine’s design delivers on this front with aplomb. By adding new stone from El Dorado Stone, running it from floor to ceiling, and incorporating a reclaimed wood mantel, she transformed the existing fireplace into a stunning focal point.
“We took the existing stone down along with the old mantel, then we added new stone from El Dorado Stone and we placed it from the floor to ceiling, along with a new beam that lands in the new stone in a sculptural way,” Jasmine explains.
The addition of a swivel chair in front of the fireplace further reinforces the cabin’s cozy aesthetic, inviting visitors to curl up and bask in the warmth of the flames. Complementary details, such as the colorful art from Lindsay Letters and the tonal vases, candles, and greenery, add the finishing touches to this inviting living space.
Maximizing Storage and Functionality
In a cabin setting, where space is often at a premium, Jasmine’s design solutions for Hazel’s Cozy Cabin demonstrate a keen understanding of how to maximize functionality without compromising style. The integration of a custom built-in mudroom near the dining area provides a practical and attractive solution for storing gear and firewood, seamlessly blending form and function.
“Next to the dining area, I was able to squeeze in a mini-mudroom in the form of a custom built-in. It’s as functional as we need it to be – a place to house some of our gear and some firewood,” Jasmine shares.
Similarly, the kitchen showcases Jasmine’s ability to create a cohesive and visually stunning space, even in the face of a challenging layout. By installing cabinetry all the way around the kitchen and incorporating panel-ready appliances, she was able to achieve a harmonious and streamlined aesthetic.
Upstairs Oasis: Elevated Bunk Beds and Cozy Nooks
As we ascend to the loft area, the design takes on a more playful and whimsical tone, perfectly capturing the essence of a cabin getaway. Jasmine’s decision to incorporate elevated bunk beds, each a queen-size for maximum comfort, taps into the nostalgic appeal of summer camp experiences.
“I imagined elevated bunk beds up here and wanted them symmetrical within the room. Each bunk bed is a queen-size bed, so they’re comfortable enough for adults to stay in,” Jasmine says. “It’s another nod to a summer camp getaway that I couldn’t resist.”
To add a cheerful pop of color, Jasmine painted the bunk beds in a bright, sunny yellow, creating a delightful contrast against the more muted tones of the lower levels. The waist-high nook opposite the bunk beds serves as a dynamic display and storage space for Hazel’s toys and books, ensuring that every inch of the loft is utilized to its fullest potential.
Bringing the Outdoors In: The Bathroom Oasis
As we venture to the upstairs bathroom, we’re met with a serene retreat that seamlessly blends the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape with modern conveniences. Jasmine’s choice to incorporate a quartzite slab in the shower, featuring river rock pieces that complement the colors of the San Bernardino National Forest, creates a stunning and immersive experience.
“The large window in the shower makes it feel like you’re up in an outdoor shower in a secluded treehouse, which I have to say is pretty awesome,” Jasmine enthuses.
By partnering with Kohler and Zia Tile, Jasmine was able to bring her vision to life, creating a bathroom that exudes both luxury and connection to the great outdoors.
