Transforming a Humble Log into a Stunning Centerpiece

I’ve always been drawn to the rustic charm of natural wood. There’s just something so warm and inviting about its raw, earthy beauty. Sourcing the Perfect Log

The first step in this DIY journey was finding the right log. As luck would have it, I actually had one right in my own backyard. I had recently had a tree trimmed, and the arborist had left behind a nicely cut log that was just begging to be repurposed.

But if you don’t have a convenient log stashed away, no problem! You can usually find someone selling firewood, and they should be able to hook you up with a suitable log. The key is to look for one with a clean, even cut on both ends, so it sits flat and doesn’t rock back and forth.

Stripping and Sanding the Log

With my log in hand, the next step was to remove the bark. I found that a large flathead screwdriver and a hammer worked wonders for this task. I simply wedged the screwdriver into the bark, then gently tapped the back of the screwdriver with the hammer, which allowed the layers of bark to peel right off.

Once the bark was removed, I used a small handheld electric sander to smooth out the surface of the log. If you don’t have access to a power sander, no worries – good old-fashioned sandpaper will do the trick, though it may take a bit more elbow grease.

Drying the Log

I may also opt to add a polyurethane sealer to the top of the log, especially in the areas where I might set down a cup or book. That way, I can protect the wood from any spills or stains. But for now, I’m quite smitten with the raw, natural look, so I’m still on the fence about that.

The Finishing Touches

With the decorative elements complete and the protective measures in place, all that was left to do was find the perfect spot for my new log end table. I ended up placing it next to a cozy armchair in my living room, where it now serves as a convenient and stylish spot to set down my book, my coffee mug, or any other little trinkets I want to have within easy reach.

And you know, my son mentioned that this log table could even double as a stool in a pinch. I suppose he’s right – it might not be the most comfortable seat, but it certainly adds an extra layer of versatility to this one-of-a-kind piece.
