Make Your Own Log End Table

Transforming a Humble Log into a Stunning Centerpiece

I’ve always been drawn to the rustic charm of natural wood. There’s just something so warm and inviting about its raw, earthy beauty. That’s why, when I stumbled upon a log in my backyard that had been neatly sliced, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it – turn it into a one-of-a-kind log end table for my living room.

Now, I’ll admit, the idea of taking a plain old log and transforming it into a stylish piece of furniture may have seemed a bit daunting at first. But after a little research and with the help of some handy tools, I can say with confidence that it’s a surprisingly straightforward project that anyone can tackle. And the end result? Absolutely stunning, if I do say so myself.

Sourcing the Perfect Log

The first step in this DIY journey was finding the right log. As luck would have it, I actually had one right in my own backyard. I had recently had a tree trimmed, and the arborist had left behind a nicely cut log that was just begging to be repurposed.

But if you don’t have a convenient log stashed away, no problem! You can usually find someone selling firewood, and they should be able to hook you up with a suitable log. The key is to look for one with a clean, even cut on both ends, so it sits flat and doesn’t rock back and forth.

Stripping and Sanding the Log

With my log in hand, the next step was to remove the bark. I found that a large flathead screwdriver and a hammer worked wonders for this task. I simply wedged the screwdriver into the bark, then gently tapped the back of the screwdriver with the hammer, which allowed the layers of bark to peel right off.

Once the bark was removed, I used a small handheld electric sander to smooth out the surface of the log. If you don’t have access to a power sander, no worries – good old-fashioned sandpaper will do the trick, though it may take a bit more elbow grease.

Drying the Log

As luck would have it, my log ended up getting a bit wet one evening when I left it outside uncovered. But I quickly learned that a heat gun can work wonders for drying out wood. I grabbed my trusty Worx MakerX heat gun, and in no time, my log was dry and ready for the next step.

The great thing about the MakerX system is that it’s so versatile – it’s not just a heat gun, but a whole suite of interchangeable tools that all use the same 20V battery. So I was able to tackle multiple aspects of this project without having to worry about swapping out batteries or cords.

Decorating the Log

Now, I’ll admit, I’m not the world’s greatest artist, but I had a vision in my head for how I wanted to decorate this log, and I was determined to make it a reality. Using a pencil, I sketched out a simple design featuring trees all around the log, along with a crescent moon and a few birds.

To bring my design to life, I turned to the Worx MakerX Wood Crafter tool. This little guy heats up to a toasty 900 degrees, which was perfect for burning my sketched images into the wood. I kept the temperature around 700 degrees and slowly, carefully traced over my pencil lines, watching as the design came to life before my eyes.

Protecting the Floors

As I mentioned, I have hardwood floors in my living room, and I was a bit worried about the log scratching them up. So I decided to add some felt furniture pads to the bottom of the log to help protect the delicate surface.

I may also opt to add a polyurethane sealer to the top of the log, especially in the areas where I might set down a cup or book. That way, I can protect the wood from any spills or stains. But for now, I’m quite smitten with the raw, natural look, so I’m still on the fence about that.

The Finishing Touches

With the decorative elements complete and the protective measures in place, all that was left to do was find the perfect spot for my new log end table. I ended up placing it next to a cozy armchair in my living room, where it now serves as a convenient and stylish spot to set down my book, my coffee mug, or any other little trinkets I want to have within easy reach.

And you know, my son mentioned that this log table could even double as a stool in a pinch. I suppose he’s right – it might not be the most comfortable seat, but it certainly adds an extra layer of versatility to this one-of-a-kind piece.

Overall, I’m absolutely thrilled with how this project turned out. What was once just a humble log is now a stunning, personalized centerpiece that truly brings a touch of rustic charm to my living space. And the best part? I can take pride in knowing that I made it with my own two hands.

So if you’re looking to add a unique and eye-catching piece to your home, I highly encourage you to give this log end table a try. With a little bit of creativity and the right tools, you can transform a simple log into a true work of art. And who knows – you might just surprise yourself with what you’re capable of!
