Forget One-Size-Fits-All, Let’s Get Custom!
Are you frustrated trying to find the perfect liner for your window box planter? Well, friend, I’m here to let you in on a little secret: making your own custom liner is the way to go.
You see, I used to think the “one-size-fits-all” concept was a load of baloney. I mean, have you ever tried to squeeze into a pair of jeans that was supposed to fit everyone? Yeah, me neither. It’s just not a reality for us curvy folk.
But then I started thinking, “Surely a simple rectangle couldn’t be that hard to get right?” Boy, was I in for a rude awakening. Finding the perfect liner for my vintage railing planters was about as easy as finding a needle in a haystack.
Measuring and Cutting: The Key to Customization
So, I knew I had to take matters into my own hands. And let me tell you, creating a custom-sized planter liner has so many advantages. Not only does it fit your specific planter like a glove, but you can also get creative with the look and feel.
Let’s start with the measurements. For my planters, the length (side to side) is 31 inches, the depth (front to back) varies from 6 inches at the bottom to 7 inches at the top, and the height is a mere 4.5 inches. But don’t worry, I’ve got a little trick up my sleeve to make sure it all comes together perfectly.
First, I calculated the length and height of the burlap I needed. The length is the side-to-side measurement (31 inches) plus the height (4.5 inches) plus 1 inch for a seam allowance. That comes out to 36.5 inches. The depth (front to back) calculation is the height (4.5 inches) plus the depth (7 inches) plus another 4.5 inches for the height, all doubled and with a 1-inch seam allowance. That’s 39 inches.
Now, I cut a rectangle of burlap that is 39 inches by 36.5 inches. Fold it in half down the length, and you’ve got yourself a perfect-fitting tube!
Adding Structure and Flair
But wait, there’s more! To keep those long sides from flopping over, I decided to add a little extra support. I had some leftover plastic mesh lying around, so I cut it to 6 inches tall and slipped it inside the liner before stitching up the ends.
Now, the fun part: creating those signature envelope-style flaps at the corners. I marked the center point on both the length and depth, then stitched from the edge to the center point on each corner. Voila! Custom-tailored window box liner, ready to make my planters look like a million bucks.
Bringing It All Together
The final touch? Lining the inside with a layer of plastic to help retain moisture. You see, our planters are up high and exposed to all kinds of wind and sun, so they tend to dry out quickly. The plastic helps keep the plants happy and healthy without compromising drainage.
And just like that, my custom window box liners are ready to be filled with all sorts of colorful, blooming beauties. I can’t wait to see them spilling over the sides, adding a touch of charm and curb appeal to our timber-clad home.
Breaking the Mold
Now, I know what you’re thinking: “But Diane, won’t this be a ton of work?” And to that, I say, “Pfft, nonsense!” Sure, it takes a little bit of time and effort, but the end result is so worth it. Plus, you get the satisfaction of knowing you created something unique and tailored just for your space.
And let’s be real, when have we ever been satisfied with the “one-size-fits-all” approach? We’re a creative bunch, us DIY enthusiasts, and we deserve window box liners that are just as unique as we are.
So, what are you waiting for? Grab that burlap, get your measuring tape, and let’s get to work on crafting the perfect custom window box planter for your home. Trust me, your plants (and your curb appeal) will thank you.
